RHR is well renowned as the foremost series of rigging training ever produced for LightWave 3D. Now in its second version, this tradition is continued and brought up to date with all the latest tools and workflows available.

Designed from the ground up to suit users of all levels, these rigging tutorials will give you the complete picture of rigging in LightWave from all the fundamental details and knowledge every rigger should possess, through to the most high end methods and techniques for designing and building the kinds of rigs that have for so long, and by so many, been thought of as impossible to achieve using LW.

All the tools, all the tricks... everything! You will find it all here. If you’re looking to learn what LightWave’s rigging toolset can do at its absolute best, then this is the training series for you.

There is no other like it!

If you already own the original RHR series, you may wonder if there is that much new here. The answer is... Plenty!

The arrangement and presentation of the material has been completely redesigned, helping this series to function far better as a reference you can come back to when needing to review certain details. Newer tools and updates to LightWave are covered and new techniques and projects have been added which will help you explore and discover new methods and workflows. Clearly though, certain things, though laid out differently will not have changed, so there will certainly be some “doubling up” of detail. Because of this, existing RHR owners may purchase at a reduced upgrade price. See below for details.

RHR comes in 3 main chapters totaling over 20 hrs of first-class instruction...

Foundations - This section will take you through all the basic, fundamental knowledge that every rigger (and to be honest user) of LightWave should know. Spaces, transforms, co-ordinate systems and the basics of the LightWave rigging toolset are all laid bare. In addition, this chapter gives focus to a good deal of rigging theory, helping you to understand the importance of design and implementation, and the kinds of systems that you may find yourself in need of building from one project to the next. This chapter is designed to get you clued in to the basics and most importantly get you started in thinking like a rigger so that you may begin to solve problems and challenges as you confront them. This basic knowledge is so very important to all, that this chapter is offered for FREE. You can view it in the playlist above.

Tools - Over 30 videos covering all the individual rigging tools, what they do, and how to use them in different cicumstances. In many cases, getting these tools to behave predictably and understand why they need to be used or mixed in a certain way will draw heavily on the basic knowledge delivered in the first chapter. If you have ever tried setting up some constraint, or weighting, or whatever else and wondered “why” it seems to be doing a certain thing that you just can’t quite understand, this chapter will help you fill all those holes, whilst introducing you to new techniques and uses for the LW toolset you may otherwise never have thought of.

Projects - This for many will doubtlessly be the fun bit. This third chapter will take everything from the previous two and guide you through the building of whole rigs. We will see whole characters, mechanical setups, facial setups, working with props, skinning, as well as guides to individual “systems” which will help you to cement your knowledge and think creatively when confronted with your own rigging tasks. It is going to be awesome!

Beyond Genoma!

Ahh... Genoma, that most recent addition to LightWave’s rigging toolset.

Genoma provides a good set of tools for producing a variety of rigging setups quickly and easily, however... Like any autorigging solution (my own included) it cannot provide for everything, nor every eventuality. There are even a good number of commonly desired setups which Genoma rigs do not support. This tutorial series will, therefore, show you not only how to get the best results out of Genoma by itself, but will also show you much more advanced methods for producing customisations of Genoma rigs, as well as how to improve many of the control systems Genoma produces.

Prior Knowledge?

Not much... Welcome aboard noobs!.

A basic familiarity with using LightWave is, clearly, needed, this series is focussed on rigging, not how to use LW from the ground up. Beyond that however, you will find all the bases covered for you. But no matter your level of experience with LightWave or its rigging toolset, from noob to pro, I can promise that you will find here ideas and techniques that will teach you a great many new things, and get you rigging in LightWave like never before.

The With each new version of LightWave, things get changed, new tools are added and so on. However, whilst newer versions do offer newer tools, there are not all that many of them, and nothing from previous versions has been taken away. As such, whilst these tutorials are prepared using v11.5 over 90% of the material applies no differently to earlier versions as far back as 9.6. As such, if you are on a previous version, you will still find these tutorials to be complete and show you everything that is available to you. Promise.
